in the Holy Writ.

Coarse hair from his mount’s mane whipped Rush’s face. He leaned low over the mount’s shoulder to avoid the lower branches that slapped past him as the mount moved swiftly through the trees. The black mount pursued his quarry through the woods, where Sarat had tried to lose or confuse his pursuer, gathering speed over ground that was dangerously rough. Rahan gained on the gray mount thrashing through the woods ahead of him, pushed to a nearly impossible pace by its merciless rider. Sarat spurred the Vasi Royal Guard mount to keep up the reckless pace, and the mount valiantly gave all his strength to the demands. It was in his breeding and training to sacrifice himself for his human passenger. The assassin glanced over his shoulder as the mount plunged headlong through the trees, and hailed his pursuer.

“Come on, you goddamn son-of-a-whore! If you get me you may earn those captain’s bars you’ve wanted! If I don’t get you first, that is!”

Rahan labored, giving all his strength to the chase. The black horse brought his nose alongside the Vasi mount’s hip. The pair of big mounts lunged in tandem past trees, weaving a perilous course among the thick boles and undergrowth. Rush whispered encouragement to his mount and the horse inched farther up, bringing his muzzle close to the assassin’s knee. Sarat kicked at the mount’s face. At the same moment Rush reached forward and grabbed the back of the saddle on the gray horse. Sarat missed and the effort set him off balance, slowing his mount. Rush took advantage of the opportunity to vault from the black mount onto the back of Sarat’s saddle. Already hampered by the assassin’s weighty bulk, the gray mount staggered under the sudden impact of the added weight. Rush clutched his enemy, and both he and Sarat spilled from the mount and tumbled to the ground, crashing over a patch of gooseberry bushes and rolling into a bed of ferns in a small clearing.

In spite of his large frame and his weight, Sarat was quick and agile. When he felt himself falling, he twisted around toward his attacker so that he would fall on top of him and crush him with his weight. Rush at the
